In a world where aesthetics and functionality blend seamlessly, Maureen Mugisha Otyek has emerged as a leader in interior design with her business, Motyeque Interiors. A devoted wife, mother of three, and entrepreneur, Maureen’s journey from humble beginnings to a thriving business is nothing short of inspirational.
From Garage Sales to a Thriving Business
Maureen’s passion for creating beautiful spaces started simply—picking unique pieces from around the world and selling them from her garage. Demand quickly grew, motivating her and her brother to open a store. What began as small-scale sales evolved into a comprehensive interior design service, earning a reputation for personalized and functional residential and commercial spaces.
Services Tailored to Clients’ Dreams
Motyeque Interiors offers an extensive range of services from design consultation and project management to the procurement of high-quality furnishings. The company’s hallmark is its commitment to crafting spaces that reflect clients’ unique visions while maximizing both form and function. Their store, a treasure trove of interior accessories, further supports their design projects and independent customers alike.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Learning
Like any entrepreneurial journey, Maureen faced challenges. “My biggest challenge is multiplying myself; I can’t be everywhere,” she notes, adding that working with Gen Z employees can be difficult as they often have short-term outlooks. Yet, in times of struggle, she discovered creative solutions, such as collaborating with other industry professionals. A particular challenge when illness struck mid-project led to the formation of a supportive community of designers—a move that has transformed how she handles projects.
Leadership Beyond Business
Beyond running Motyeque Interiors, Maureen Otyek plays a pivotal role in the interior design community as the Vice President of the Interior Design Association Uganda (IDAU). The association, launched during a significant event at Next Media Park in Kampala, unites 22 founding members and over 120 designers with a shared mission to set industry standards and foster a collaborative network. This leadership position underscores Maureen’s dedication to advancing the profession and supporting her peers.
Keys to Growth: Mentorship and Team Dynamics
Maureen credits much of her business growth to having a mentor and a business coach, as well as a great business partner who shares her values. She has learned the importance of scaling carefully and investing in lifelong learning and well-executed systems. Her retail team’s loyalty and enthusiasm have been fostered through supportive relationships, ongoing training, and celebrating achievements like family.
A Humbling Journey with Lasting Lessons
Being an entrepreneur has reshaped Maureen both personally and professionally. She has come to value failure for the lessons it imparts and is passionate about passing on her knowledge. “I now appreciate failure. I’ve learned more from failure than success and I’m driven to mentor others to spare them some of the hurdles I faced,” she shares.
Words of Wisdom for Budding Entrepreneurs
Maureen’s advice is simple yet profound: “Get a mentor! For every gap you feel, find someone who can help you bridge it. Passion alone isn’t enough—it must be coupled with skill. Keep learning!”
From her unwavering dedication to her ability to pivot in times of difficulty, Maureen Mugisha Otyek’s journey with Motyeque Interiors is a testament to resilience, continuous growth, and the power of community in building a successful business.
