Press Release for MIIC Start-Up Hatch 1.0 Bootcamp Launch

The Makerere Innovation and Incubation Center (MIIC) officially launches its inaugural Startup Hatch 1.0 Bootcamp, bringing together 20 carefully selected early-stage startups for an intensive program aimed at transforming promising prototypes into investor-ready, market-validated ventures.

Operating under Uganda’s Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, MIIC is launching the Bootcamp as the opening activity of its broader Venture Building Program (VBP), an 8-week incubation sprint designed to equip founders with the practical skills, frameworks, and support networks needed to compete and grow.

A Three-Day Sprint with a Clear Mission

The Bootcamp is structured across three focused days. The first centers on MVP development and team foundations, walking startups through agile sprint planning and technical architecture. Day two shifts to customer development, introducing founders to early adopter identification, the Jobs-to-be-Done methodology, and go-to-market strategy. The final day tackles business modelling and operational readiness, covering revenue models, unit economics, and distribution planning.

Who It's For

Startup Hatch 1.0 targets ventures emerging from MIIC’s Graduate Innovation Program (GIP), Technology and Enterprise Support (TES), and other early-stage innovation pipelines. The program spans nine high-impact sectors, including fintech, agritech, health tech, EdTech, artificial intelligence, e-commerce, mobility, the creative economy, and green economy, all aligned to Uganda’s National Development Plan IV (NDP IV).

What Startups Stand to Gain

Selected ventures receive structured mentorship, targeted business development services, access to co-working spaces and prototyping labs, and customer validation support. The program culminates in a Demo Day offering direct exposure to investors, partners, and ecosystem stakeholders.

By the end of the sprint, MIIC aims to have 20 functional MVPs developed and tested with real users, over 400 early adopters engaged, and between 18 and 20 ventures formally registered with the necessary legal and financial structures in place. Long-term, the center is targeting at least 30% of graduates achieving sustained market traction and securing follow-on funding.

Building Uganda's Innovation Future

Gilbert Junior Buregyeya, Programs Lead at MIIC, described the Bootcamp as a significant milestone in the center’s broader mission, noting that by providing the right frameworks and mentorship, MIIC is laying the foundation for startups that will drive inclusive growth and contribute to Uganda’s national development agenda.

Backed by the Ministry of Finance, MIIC continues to position itself as a leading structured venture-building hub in East Africa, bridging the gap between academic research and real-world entrepreneurship in support of Uganda’s Tenfold Growth Strategy.
