The newly-elected speakers of Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA Abubakar Kawalya has called for unity among leaders.

The technical wing of KCCA and the politicians have often clashed accusing the other of interference which has affected service delivery.

In his inaugural speech on Thursday at the City Hall, Kawalya promised to promote cooperation and unity between political and technical leaders.

Kawalya further committed to work closely with the technical wing to serve Kampala and asked them to always respect and implement council resolutions.

He asked the councillors to work together to develop and pass ordinances that seek to solve challenges faced by the people of Kampala like poor sanitation and poverty.

NRM’s Bruhan Byaruhanga from Kyambogo University who won the position of Deputy Speaker says he would ensure there is rule of law and impartiality at KCCA.

He also says he will ensure there is harmony and unity within KCCA adding that they cannot deliver services diligently if there is bickering among elected leaders and technical wing.

Doreen Nyanjura who lost to Kawalya says that while the win was a result of an alliance between Kawalya and the NRM represented by Byaruhanga, she will support and work with the two if they seek to serve the people of Kampala.

In August 2019, Parliament amended the KCCA Act introducing positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker at the Authority and the five Divisions of Kampala.
