Participating schools arrived early for the official launch of Season 11 of the Stanbic National Schools Championship, where the message was clear this is more than a competition. Dubbed “Flex Your Genius,” the programme is challenging students to step out of routine classroom learning and begin thinking like problem-solvers and entrepreneurs.

Speaking at the launch, Tunde Thorpe, Executive Head of Business & Commercial Banking at Stanbic Bank, said the initiative has, for over a decade, shaped young minds into innovators. “For over a decade, this programme has played a vital role in identifying, nurturing and supporting young entrepreneurial talent across the country. It equips students with financial literacy and innovation skills,” Thorpe said.

He stressed that the championship is designed as a hands-on learning experience, pushing students to apply ideas to real-life situations. “This is not just a competition but a training opportunity. Students go through mentorship, work in teams and create, refine and incubate ideas, developing the ability to think through contemporary problems,” he added.

Education officials backed the programme, highlighting its relevance to Uganda’s current education direction. Juliet Atuhairwe, Commissioner for Secondary Education at the Ministry of Education and Sports, said the championship supports the competence-based curriculum and national priorities. “We appreciate this programme as it is well aligned with the competence-based curriculum and the government’s priorities in skilling, innovation, and youth empowerment,” she said.

With students already on the ground, the focus now shifts to how well they can turn their ideas into practical solutions that address today’s challenges.
