COVID-19: Uganda Lockdown Extended to May 5

President Museveni has pushed the countrywide lockdown for 21 more days to curb the spread of Corona Virus and will be ending on May 5th, 2020.

The announcement follows the end of the 14-day lockdown and curfew which was announced by the President on 30th March 2020 which was set to end on Tuesday at midnight.

While addressing the nation from State House Nakasero, the President said that despite Ugandas progressive efforts in fighting the spread of the virus, the government still needs more time to analyze the situation before suspending the lockdown.

Let us first keep quiet for the next 21 days, and if nothing worse comes up, we shall see what to do next. Museveni said.

The extension comes as Uganda reports 54 Corona virus cases while seven people have so far been discharged from hospital after having recovered.

The decision by the President means that schools, churches, bars and other public places shall remain closed for the next 21 days.

All shops and arcades selling non-essential commodities shall as well remain closed, public transport and private vehicles shall as well remain closed.

The President noted that all the measures that were announced earlier shall all remain in force including the night curfews as well as the ban on doing physical exercises in public places.

During his address the president noted that all cargo truck drivers especially those working across the boarders shall always be tested of the virus but shall be left to drive waiting for their results.

On the other hand, the President revealed that the country will be soon manufacturing Hydroxyxhloroquine with the help of the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

The other day, I spoke by phone to the Prime Minister of India Modi, India will supply us with Hydroxychroloquine as well as the raw materials to make it here, Museveni said.

ThePresident noted that the medicine helps the Red cells to have the capacity to supply oxygen to the body which helps in the fight against the virus and it also reduces the capacity of the virus to replicate.

We shall not just produce hydroxychloroquine, we shall as well produce all the other protective equipment like the masks, scrub suits, gaggles, protective glass, gloves, Museveni said.
