Centenary Bank and Rotary Raise UGX 3.5 Billion at 14th Cancer Run to Boost Nsambya Cancer Centre

The 14th Rotary Cancer Run drew thousands of Ugandans from all walks of life to Kololo Independence Grounds on Sunday, reaffirming the country’s collective determination to fight cancer. This year’s edition raised an impressive UGX 3.5 billion, funds that will go directly towards the completion of the Cancer Centre at Nsambya Hospital.

Speaking at the event, Centenary Bank Managing Director Dr. Fabian Kasi hailed the overwhelming support of participants, noting that the Cancer Run has grown from a modest community initiative into a national movement attracting over 60,000 participants annually.

“We deeply appreciate your participation as we unite to fight cancer. For the last 14 years, Centenary Bank has been proud to stand with Rotary in this cause, and we pledge to continue this commitment. Together, we can defeat cancer in Uganda,” Dr. Kasi said.

A Growing Cancer Burden

According to the Uganda Cancer Institute, cancer cases in the country are on the rise, with more than 35,000 new diagnoses reported annually. Limited infrastructure and late detection have been cited as major barriers to treatment, leaving many patients with little chance of survival.

The funds raised through the Cancer Run are helping bridge this gap. Over the years, proceeds have gone into the construction of the Rotary Cancer Ward at Nsambya Hospital, and this year’s UGX 3.5 billion will accelerate the establishment of a fully-fledged Cancer Centre. Once completed, the centre will provide advanced diagnostic services, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, helping thousands of patients access treatment closer to home.

A Collective Effort

The 2025 run attracted corporate sponsors, civil society, schools, and individuals, all united by a shared goal. Centenary Bank, a founding partner, has remained central in mobilizing resources and raising awareness. Staff of the bank, led by Dr. Kasi, joined thousands of other runners in a powerful display of solidarity.

Rotary leaders emphasized that beyond fundraising, the annual run has become an awareness campaign, encouraging Ugandans to embrace regular screening and healthier lifestyles to prevent late-stage diagnoses.

Hope for the Future

With the new contribution, the total funds raised since the inception of the Cancer Run have now crossed UGX 20 billion, significantly boosting Uganda’s capacity to combat the disease. Organizers remain optimistic that the Nsambya facility will soon stand as a beacon of hope for cancer patients and their families.

As Dr. Kasi put it, the real victory lies not just in the billions collected but in the lives that will be saved: “Together, we can make a difference.”
