The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) recently joined retailers in Makindye for the Growing Retailers Innovatively Together (GRIT) programme, an initiative by Nile Breweries Limited (NBL) aimed at helping small business owners build stronger, more sustainable enterprises. The programme brought together retailers and entrepreneurs to learn practical business skills that can help them grow their businesses, improve profitability, and prepare for future challenges.
As part of the initiative, NSSF partnered with Nile Breweries and MTN MoMo Uganda to introduce participants to Smartlife Flexi, a voluntary savings product designed for workers in the informal and semi-formal sectors. Many Ugandans earn a living through small businesses, retail shops, and other self-employed activities. However, most of these workers do not have access to traditional social security arrangements that are common in formal employment. This often leaves them vulnerable to financial uncertainty later in life.
Through Smartlife Flexi, NSSF is providing a simple and flexible way for entrepreneurs and small business owners to save regularly and secure their financial future. The product allows individuals to make contributions at their own pace, making it suitable for people whose incomes may vary from month to month. During the engagement, participants learned about the importance of long-term saving and how consistent contributions can help them achieve greater financial stability while focusing on growing their businesses.
NSSF emphasized that financial security is an important part of business success. By encouraging a culture of saving, the Fund aims to help entrepreneurs build resilience against unexpected challenges and prepare for future opportunities.
The partnership between NSSF, Nile Breweries, and MTN MoMo Uganda reflects a shared commitment to expanding financial inclusion across the country. By taking social security services directly to communities and workplaces, more Ugandans can access tools that support wealth creation and long-term financial wellbeing.
As programmes like GRIT continue to reach more entrepreneurs, initiatives such as Smartlife Flexi are playing a key role in helping business owners secure their futures while contributing to Uganda’s economic growth.
