The 2020 Labour Day celebrations was celebrated “scientifically” according to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

Mbarara Municipality was this year’s venue but due to presence of novel coronavirus in the country, the “scientific celebrations” took place at State House Entebbe.

Speaking as the guest of honour, Mr Museveni said “laying off workers during this crisis is not a good idea especially because things are going to improve.”

“Instead, I would suggest that these workers are sent on leave and recalled when the situation normalizes. I am very optimistic we are going to be stronger after this crisis,” the president advised.

President Museveni will address the nation for the 13th time on 5, May 2021 with expectations that he could relax some lockdown restrictions, giving majority of Ugandans opportunity to move out using different modes of transport.

Once the lockdown is lifted, it will mark the ‘end’ of 35 days of “stay home” rule. Other guidelines like washing hands with clean water and soap, including sanitizing will stay.

“Ugandans could soon be wearing facemasks,” he said. This is an indication that Ugandans may soon breathe some fresh air, although with some restrictions in place.

Mr Museveni told Ugandans that there is no safer place in any part of the world more than Uganda. “I suspect that if God allows us come out of this crisis, many people will come here [Uganda],” he added.

On Thursday, Ministry of Health confirmed two new cases of COVID-19, pushing country’s total confirmed cases to 83.

The confirmed cases were part of the 2,071 samples tested at Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) in Entebbe.

“The confirmed cases are both Kenyan male truck drivers: 55 year old and 27 year old who arrived via Busia and Malaba respectively,” Ministry of Health confirmed via Twitter.
